Since the establishment of the Military School of Internal Troops of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan (now the Academy of the National Guard of the Republic of Kazakhstan) in 1997, the department was named as the Department of Social Sciences. And as a result of making some organizational and staff changes in 2007, it was renamed the Department of Military Pedagogical and Social Sciences, and in 2012 to the Department of Military Pedagogy and Psychology.
The Department of Military Pedagogy and Psychology is intended for the formation of general education knowledge among students in all specialities, the development of the personality of an officer, citizen, patriot and professional, consciously and responsibly performing the tasks of protecting the fatherland and ensuring the internal security of the state.
The task of the department is to develop students’ practical skills of psychological and pedagogical activity in working with personnel; education of the main qualities of a future officer: personal (moral, moral-combat), ideological, organizational, military-special, military-pedagogical; familiarization of students with the norms and rules of behavior, ideas and traditions generally accepted in Kazakh society; formation of professional reliability and moral-volitional qualities of a military leader, knowledge and methodological skills of educational work organizations.

Since 1997, the Department has been led by colonels V. M. Orlov, Sh. K. Altynbekov, Y. A. Lopatin, Zh. K Tashibaev, A. G. Kuharev, D. Sh. Elzhanov, B. T. Kozhakhmetov, O. Zh. Seitbekov.
Since 2022, the Chair has been headed by Colonel Serov Igor Alexandrovich and, under his leadership, continues to carry out successful educational, methodological and scientific tasks aimed at training highly professional law enforcement officers.
The staff of the Department is 100 percent staffed with qualified specialists who have extensive professional experience and service in the military in various positions in the agency of the Educational and Social-Legal work of the troops, including doctors of sciences, graduate students, masters, these are officers like colonel B.S. Smagulov, lieutenant colonel R.B. Tastanbekov, K.B. Maldybaev and colonel of the reserve A. I. Mityaev who continues to pass on his knowledge to trainees since the foundation of the academy is an example for the younger generation of military scientists. For two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020, Alexander Ilyich took 2nd place in the Academy’s «Best Teacher of the Year» review competition.
The teaching staff of the department has been showing high results in educational, methodological and scientific activities among all the departments of the Academy over the past years, as evidenced by the 1st place occupied in the competitions for the title of the best educational and methodical literature, the best electronic library and the Academy audience.
In order to improve the learning process at the department, new learning technologies are being mastered, based primarily on the introduction of video, computer technology and other modern means of processing and transmitting information. The department has developed more than 10 electronic textbooks and more than 40 video tutorials, which have found application for the training of highly educated and competent specialists.
The department continues the traditional holding of scientific and theoretical (practical) seminars and conferences on topical issues of the activities of the troops, the organization of the educational process in the educational institution. The officers of the department take an active part in international scientific conferences in the field of national security and education development. As part of the work of the military scientific circle of students under the guidance of teachers of the department, trainees take prizes in republican competitions of scientific projects held annually, as well as in various city and regional competitions of readers, essays, are participants in scientific and practical seminars organized by M. Kozybayev SKU.
Over the past period, the department has graduated more than 450 specialists of educational and socio-legal work for activities in the armed forces, many of whom already hold senior positions of battalions, regiments and formations of the National Guard of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Further development of the department is carry out both in the educational process and in the direction of improving its educational and material base. The classrooms are equipped with modern technical means of education and upbringing. The methodological office is equipped with shelves with the published literature of the faculty of the department. There is a class of psychological work.
